Abstract

Universities in the information age, once they get over the overwhelming shift brought about by the application of the new technologies of information, are likely to become actual Nodes in a global network of social organizations devoted to orchestrate worldwide processes of production and distribution of knowledge. This essay offers arguments that support this hypothesis. It starts with a background view on the concept of university, as a social organization, and on the various models it has attempted in order to adapt to its social and historical context. We primarily focus on the American case, for it is a higher education system typical of this process of adaptation. Subsequently, we analyze in detail the impact of the technological revolution on universities, with focus on the Mexican case. Finally, we introduce the model of Node University as an alternative to those institutions that are willing to open themselves to this new era.
