Abstract

This article begins with a brief sociological reflection on the building of knowledge and interdisciplinary studies. The academic profile of a UAM-X publishing project founded in 1990, the journal Sociedades Rurales, Producción y Medio Ambiente, is described. Contributions to the journal are mainly from the humanities and social sciences (58%) and biology (39%). Of the authors, 46% are Mexican; 35% from the UAM and 19% foreign. In the 8 issues published to date, the authors have been associated with 28 different institutions; 57% of which were Mexican and 43% foreign. Since 2004, the journal has been co-edited with the Antonio Narro Autonomous Agricultural University. The main challenges facing the journal are a) to meet CONACYT standards, b) to register the journal in indices, and c) to create an electronic version for the web.
