Abstract

Since the early years of the past century, Latin American universities have had an “extensionist” vocation; a mission to disseminate the culture of science and the humanities beyond the confines of academic communities. The principal method employed by universities to broadcast their cultural products to their communities and to society in general has traditionally been journals and printed publications. Gutenberg’s Galaxy is vast: even today the universities have not finished crossing it. University journals are more than a means of dissemination. They are, the majority of them, academic projects that bring together interest groups linked by an ideological, political, social or cultural affinity. To encourage discussion, a documentary video entitled Las Revistas de tu Casa has been produced. It deals with issues concerning Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) journals as a whole in today’s environment of rapid technological change.
