Abstract

The impressive growth of information and communication technology, particulary in recent years, has apparently outstripped the explanatory powers of many interpretative schemes that formerly provided a relative degree of confidence in the theoretical progress of our discipline. In order to bring a favorable resolution to the dilemmas imposed by rapid advances in information and communication technology, communications researchers must undertake a rigorous, systematic and profound critical review of many of the “theoretical certainties” in which we were comfortably fixed.
