Abstract

Given the current socio-environmental crisis, higher education institutions face the demand for applied knowledge across different fields. This paper refers to the field of Biology taught at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Xochimilco (UAM-X). The paper explores the degree of relationship that conceptual knowledge might have with the ability to apply knowledge in a specific cognitive domain that possesses a procedural nature: ecological diagnosis. Except in the case of the most successful students, the results suggest that the conceptual schemes that students own are not sufficient to guarantee a complex performance as ecological diagnosis requires. This finding is influenced by the nature of the cognitive domain studied, characterized by a relatively moderate conceptual demand, but as well by a performance extremely large and complex.
