Abstract

Quality of education is a difficult term to define clearly, precisely because of the difficulty of defining the characteristics of “a quality education.” There is an inherent contradiction in using quantitative criteria to evaluate qualitative measures. A critical analysis of these parameters is then necessary in order to understand their real value; to not simply assume that evaluation processes are “automatically scientific.” Evaluation is needed to avoid unwarranted complacency, but it must be borne in mind that such evaluation is still relative. Validity is conferred by the institutions themselves to the degree that they are conscious both of their mistakes and limits, and their successes and strengths. In summary, while quality in education is a utopian ideal, pursuing it can help achieve better education in the sciences and the humanities, and prepare better citizens and competent professionals ready to transform society based on equality and justice for all.
