Abstract

This article presents a general approach to the problem of evaluation in education, in an attempt to identify some of the most important factors in the current debate. The function and origin of evaluation are explored in general terms, as well as the assumptions on which quantitative and qualitative approaches are based, emphasizing that the choice of one or the other is based on the desired goal and on what is to be evaluated. Also discussed is the importance that is currently placed on education in the development of societies and individuals, showing that that evaluation of learning is more of a challenge than ever at both the classroom and institution level.
