Abstract

Higher education is not a coherent system, nor even a contradiction-free whole. In recent decades, educational institutions have lost a great part of their identity as "institutions," tending to become "businesses" that yield to the dictates of the market. This has contributed considerably towards weakening their role of reconciling the individual with society; that is, their ability to make a significant contribution to the creation of a social being. For institutions of higher education to recover their role in promoting human independence and emancipation, a reflection which questions the ethical-political meanings of education is required.
