This paper proposes a concept of the university as a societal organization, with an emphasis on the role it fulfills in the dissemination of university culture as a central principle of the contemporary university. To this end, an analysis is undertaken of the relationship between universities and cultural industries and their modern conception. An explanation is made of how cultural dissemination has become an academic extension service. The process by which Mexican universities became involved in broadcast media is analyzed. In conclusion, the main implications of cultural dissemination as a means of linking universities into the web of society are listed.
