Abstract

Responding to those who argue that Mexican schools are not fulfilling their purpose due to the low levels of educational achievement in Spanish and math, this paper proposes the need to broaden the look toward the field of sociology of education and observe the role that school plays as a socializing agent and its social functions. Moreover, it presents a methodological approach that systematizes the knowledge generated by the field of sociology of education in relation to the socializing role of elementary schools, proposing dimensions and indicators that would allow the design of an instrument that may improve the evaluation carried out through standardized exams in Spanish and math.
