Public and private universities are, through their websites, expanding their presence in cyberspace. More important than the number of virtual campuses, is the type of presence which universities currently have and will develop in the virtual environment, and what use their students and professors will make of computer services and educational platforms. The Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Xochimilco has implemented an innovative non-linear educational system that appropriates, constructs and socializes knowledge through a virtual and distance education network strategy. First used in the biology and health sciences area, the system was the product of an educational model based on the modular system The purpose of this article is to report on progress in the Virtual Education Networks Project (PREV in Spanish) of the Health and Biological Sciences Division (CBS). Students, professors and researchers use the PREV to carry out their academic tasks. These networks, which are both social and electronic, are involved in and support subject-object interaction, communication among virtual academic collaboration groups and processes of appropriation and socialization of knowledge.
