Abstract

In the health sciences, who works within the framework of the health-disease process, is obliged to work at a high level of complexity. The interpretation of biological phenomena and the effects they have on diseases, requires a thorough knowledge of the basis of different therapies and their results. This can only be achieved through a complete grasp of the basic sciences. Thus, these are fundamental to the health professions. Without them, health professionals would become mere technicians, applying curative procedures without understanding them. The teaching of the basic sciences should be the backbone of the education of health professionals. One of the aims of investigation in basic science in the UAM-Xochimilco is to improve the quality of the education of the undergraduate students. Thus, the existence of the “teacher-investigator” means that researchers are not limited to investigation as their only raison d’être. Rather, they are specifically committed to taking part in undergraduate teaching. Hence the techniques and ways of thinking of the researcher are to be found at the centre of the teaching-learning process.
