Abstract

This work tries to demonstrate the relevance of teaching and learning statistics at institutions of higher education. It describes all the benefits that imply stressing the sense and interpretation of statistical measurements in the learning process. This way of teaching makes statistics more attractive to the student body, as well as the opportunity of showing that those mathematical procedures being taught have multiple concrete applications not only in their professional future, but also in their everyday life. Through out the paper a theoretical review on this field in developed, highlighting the meaning of a statistical literacy. At the end, it illustrates the fact that statistical literacy is part of general culture and contributes in the development of critical thinking.
