“Dance” is virtually always taught, whether to professionals, amateurs or as a subject at school, as a codified vocabulary of movements to be mastered through repetition, decontextualized from their historical and cultural origins and treated as closed systems. Other important tools for teachers and their students are research and reflection on the uses of dance and other expressive languages, and on significant issues in students’ communities of origin. Teachers can use research systematically to analyze and adapt their own teaching practice to their goals and to share their experiences with others. I describe some of my recent experiences in teaching improvisation, creation and movement workshops and what I call Dancing in Community, a method of creation by movement which can be used with persons of any age to make dances based on their own ideas.
