This article is part of a research process studying the teaching profession and how it is exercised in two areas in the state of Guanajuato in regions where poverty, marginalization, migration and educational underdevelopment indices are high. Social representations of the teaching role, values declared by teachers, and the problem of implementing these values in the educational setting are analyzed in an environment that features adverse situations and conflict. The problem of poor social recognition of the work of teaching and the consequences which this has for self-evaluation and motivation for academic work are indicated.
