Abstract

This article discusses some of the main theoretical justifications for teaching art in the schools, and reflects on the arts, education and their significance for contemporary society. A literature search on the topic of music education and teaching the arts in schools found countless theses, articles, treatments and methods by educators and theoreticians in the field of the arts and music education. Many works devoted considerable space to justifying art in the school. The repeated need to justify the inclusion of music or of art in general in the school curriculum speaks of the fragility of the arts as a discipline not only in education but in society as a whole.
