Educational materials, especially elementary school textbooks, have been considered by researchers to be instruments of socialization. This study analyzes how social roles and the power structure of Mexican society are taught to Mexican children through educational materials. Materials analyzed included teacher's manuals and free textbooks for first and second grades of elementary school published in Spanish and Nahuatl for the Huasteca region and the northern highlands of Puebla state. In addition a number of supplemental books used in the same grades in private schools were examined. A comparison was made between free textbooks in Spanish published prior to the Modernization of Education Program, 1989–1994 and those produced and published under the program since 1992. The choice was made to analyze basically first and second grade textbooks, as their topics chiefly deal with the individual and the family. Some material from other grades was included to support the claims of the study.
