The literature quoted in the Degree Course in Medicine was reviewed in order to identify elements of quality and to discover how recent the information referred to was. The document used was approved by the Academic Board in December 1995. Reference was observed to be made to six titles in different editions, so that there were 129 different titles. 95% of references were in Spanish and 70% of these were published before 1990. Only 72 of the titles referred to could be obtained and among these the average difference between initial publication/ copyrighting and the edition referred to was three years. The MedLine database was consulted, using “medicine and review” as descriptors, to determine how up to date the references suggested in the course were; 101 references were found with 1996 editions, and 120 with 2000 editions. This shows that it is evident that more recent publications exist than those quoted in the modules.
