Abstract

The article discusses the history of education among the indigenous peoples, the result of a long historical process which acquired considerable complexity during the Colonial period, culminating in the Mexico of today. This history is examined in order to show that the Conquest has persistently shaped and influenced indigenous education. This historical extract is part of the establishment of a Licenciatura (undergraduate program) in Indigenous Education given in the Pedagogical University. The goal of carrying out this historical survey is: To establish which historical events and actions gave rise to the current state of indigenous professionalization.
