Abstract

The concern that John Dewey manifested through his work for the construction of democracy, and the principal part which he assigned to education in this purpose, led us to review some of the central ideas of his thoughts, to think over the characteristics that in this moment faculties would have to acquire to contribute efficiently with the construction of authentically democratic societies. With this in mind, the present essay shows some of the significant ideas about the meaning he gave in his work to the concept of democracy; the relation established between democracy and education is analyzed; and the part he assigned to teaching in its construction. Finally, it is described, from his philosophical-pedagogic principles, the orientation that faculties would have to assume in present days if they want to contribute to the accomplishments of the democratic ideals formulated by J. Dewey.
