Abstract

Chicano culture has always had a strong element of Mexican culture; sharing with it a set of symbolic standards and values. Chicanos claim the right to preserve their roots and proudly call themselves Chicanos in contemporary Anglo-Saxon society. For demographic and socioeconomic reasons, Mexican culture has had a notable influence on a number of groups of Mexican descendents. Continually increasing in population, these groups maintain their differences from the majority culture. Rather than assimilating into the American way of life, Chicanos adopt and adapt cultural values, reinforcing their origins in order to survive and to satisfy their minimum requirements. It could be claimed that the history of Mexico has always been a part of the Chicano community, even previous to 1848, but it is certainly much easier to discern the influence of Mexican history in Chicano thought from the 1960s onward, coinciding with an increase in Anglo interest in learning about their own culture.
