In November 2004, the journal Reencuentro asked all the journals of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) to reflect on their common problems and share their histories and experiences. To celebrate its 15th anniversary (which coincides with the 30th anniversary of the university), Reencuentro held a forum on November 8 and 9 at the university’s Xochimilco campus, inviting all UAM journals to brainstorm collectively on their future. The forum opened with a plenary talk by the editors in chief of journals from various UAM campuses and divisions, in which they spoke of their journals’ achievements, challenges and perspectives. Three roundtable discussions were held in the afternoon; the function and significance of UAM journals, common problems, and proposals for the future. On the second day, conclusions from the round tables were read and analysed jointly by forum participants. The 15 participants in the two-day forum were representatives of the UAM journals and/or university departments that publish them. The rest of this issue presents an overview of the university’s journals and the general conclusions from the forum.
