Abstract

In the United States, Spanish-speaking ethnic groups, among them Chicanos, face the problem of defining their identity in the face of the dominant Anglo-Saxon culture. This process may be described as a collective self-recognition phenomenon; i.e. the differential perception of a sufficiently integrated, consistent collectivity in counterpoint to other identities. Any element that is part of a cultural configuration, such as guidelines for behavior, lifestyles, festivals, songs, myths, secular and religious uses of ceremony, the social organization of space, language, everyday life, the perception and use of the physical setting, etc., may play this role.
