Abstract

Public television, by its very reason for existence, must concern itself with producing higher quality on a smaller budget than private television channels. The cultural challenge faced by public television broadcasters is to make their production pay for itself, to make it profitable and attractive to audiences while meeting government regulations on promotion of education and dissemination of culture. According to its guiding principles, public television must hold onto a responsible social vision and apply itself to the diversity of culture in our country from an interdisciplinary, humanistic perspective, and promote quality content. The commitment which public television must make with its audience is a commitment with Mexico, taking up together with public universities a crusade for freedom of thought and the responsibility it entails. Public university and public television are therefore the ideal media to promote expression of the thoughts and culture of our nation.
