Abstract

University education is showing critical signs with respect to the social values required by contemporary life. The present study is mainly oriented towards professors, examining some of the characteristics of the professional ethics which they exercise in the face of one of the greatest challenges of contemporary higher education; building social commitment in professionals as ethical characteristics of the moral citizenship of university graduates. A questionnaire was used to investigate the presence of professional and ethical values in the social dimension among students and professors in order to examine the culture from which they build their educational relationships at the professional level. The most important conclusion was that the weakness of values among university professors in comparison with students’ expectations can mainly be fitted into the logic of technocratic discourse. They criticize the fact that their education serves only to educate future professionals to perform well technically, neglecting the formation of social values. This is the core of the issue analyzed in the present study.
