This study examines the values of professionals conducting research on education at two different times; when the first centers for research on education were established, and more recently, when researchers have been participating in specialized communities of research on education which are not affiliated with particular institutions. The study identifies different modes of work and of academic relationships and professional values among researchers within institutions and in these communities, concluding that the researchers’ professional values show evidence of processes of change and development.
