Abstract

The terms professional ethics and deontology are often used interchangeably. This article aims to define the characteristics of each of these concepts more precisely. A brief survey of the history of journalism and its evolution from a trade to a profession is given, and its relationship with ethics is discussed. The article concludes with a reflection on journalism as a struggle, per Pierre Bourdieu, viewing journalistic ethics and deontology as discursive strategies.
