Abstract

Unlike other Oaxacan peoples such as the Mixtecs and the Zapotecs, the Triqui have a relatively recent history of migration to the United States. The majority of Triqui families in the Salinas Valley in the central California coast have been there for less than five years. A few Triqui men have been living in other parts of California, the central valleys and southern cities (San Diego and Los Angeles), since the 1980s. Although some of these pioneers were able to legalize their immigration status in the late 1980s, many Triqui men and the vast majority of women live in California illegally.
